All I ever wanted to do was have fun horses! I think we have all felt that way at one time or another. The problem is that when we finally get our first horse it is not the experience that we expected. We lack the confidence we had as kids and want to find a way to get that back. In my experience, I was lucky enough to have 2 horses that taught me that I had a lot to learn and that horse ownership was a privilege, not a right. With my first one, Traveler, I thought it was the horse. After I had the same problems with my second one, Farmie, I knew it was me. When I found Hawk as a baby, a horse with no history or baggage, I was determined to really do it right and learn everything I could in order to provide the two of us with the greatest experience possible.
I wanted for the two of us to be partners and for the time we spent together to be fun and challenging. I found Parelli Natural Horsemanship four years ago and it provided me not only the ongoing knowledge(the how's and why's), but a developmental path to follow in order to achieve everything I had dreamed of with Hawk. Together we have built a strong foundation, we have found softness and balance, and we have found confidence in each other.
That confidence has lead us to pursue riding interests such as jumping, cross-country, cow working, trail riding, dressage, and western pleasure when Hawk feels like jogging.
I found that when you develop a close relationship with respect and trust, learn how to be an effective leader for your horse, take the time to build a foundation, find the natural balance you once had, and push yourself just beyond your comfort zone so as to keep learning and progressing – your possibilities with your horse are limitless and you will be doing things you never thought possible. When you reach this point, you may be completely satisfied playing with your horse on the ground, riding in the arena, and trail riding or you may suddenly develop the desire to pursue competitive goals.
Whichever happens, the absolute least you are left with is an incredible relationship with your horse and the feeling of independence and competence, something I only dreamed of with my first two horses. Isn’t it funny how your expectations of yourself and your horse grow with knowledge, confidence, and continued positive experiences?
I have always loved teaching and taught in public schools for 8 years. Since the development of Starfire, I have been so lucky to be able to combine my love of teaching with my love of horses and my strong belief that there is a more effective way to reach our horsemanship goals. I continue to be amazed by the progression of my students and their horses. Their hard work and devotion to their horses is continually inspiring. I would love to share with our boarders, the knowledge and skills I have gained in order to make your horse experience what you have always dreamed of.
You will learn to become an effective leader for your horse on the ground and in the saddle (or bareback). In the process, you will develop a responsive, respectful, balanced horse and you will develop into an effective, balanced, knowledgeable rider. You will learn how your body influences your horse’s movement and how to use that influence to achieve complex maneuvers whether for fun or for competition. Learn to start a relationship, develop a partnership, build a strong foundation, and achieve your personal goals with your horse from the ground up.
I wish everyone the same experience I have had with Hawk and look forward to having with Cadence!
Hawk's sister Cadence is a stunning filly. Time not spent sleeping or eating is spent playing games with Jen that are specifically designed to build confidence and develop the foundation for success under saddle. Training should be more than a responsibility, it should be fulfilling and always fun.
A match made in heaven, Jenny found Hawk and fell in love with him as a weanling. This team is the ultimate union of horse and rider. Hawk and Jen have begun working on Level Three of Parelli Natural Horsemanship.
